The ABC and SBS have been giddily reporting that not part Greek but part Aboriginal, or “Yorta Yorta woman”, Sheena Watt is going to be the first “indigenous” representative in the Victorian parliament, filling the vacancy left by the resignation of Jenny Mikakos.
The pre-selection criteria for the safe Labor seat of northern Melbourne (where Aboriginals are thin on the ground) was, not formally, but essentially:
- must be from Socialist Left faction of the Labor party
- must be Aboriginal
- must be female
Her main rival was “Taungurung woman” Prue Stewart, who withdrew, after realising she wasn’t going to have the numbers.
Some other Yorta Yorta people, who are from around Echuca in northern Victoria:
It is now almost compulsory in the media to describe any Aboriginal or part Aboriginal as “*tribe-name* man/woman”. It is fake and thoroughly gay.
