Shaun Smith recently received a $1.4 million insurance payout for damage caused to his brain from multiple concussions suffered during his 109 game career playing for Melbourne FC and then North Melbourne FC starting in the late 1980’s. He says the concussions contributed to him ending up broke and institutionalised:
This time 11 months ago I was in a mental institution and had hit rock bottom basically. I had nothing in my pockets at all.
Despite this, in “Shaun Smith supportive of daughter Amy, signed by AFLW club North Melbourne” he says he is just fine with his 21 year old little girl following in his brain fogged footballing footsteps.
And possibly ending up like this now and again:
And knowing that girl footballers suffer concussions at twice the rate as the men do.
It’s incredible that this needs to be stated, but,…. boys and girls are different, physically girls are more fragile, but more importantly in evolutionary biology terms they are more valuable. Eggs are expensive, sperm is cheap, and any healthy society must protect them from unnecessary risk so they are capable of breeding and caring for children, which is their one job. You don’t risk damage to them in frivolous pursuits like girls football, and those who do have abdicated their responsibility not only to the girls under their authority but to society and future generations in general, with the problem being caused by more a general societal wide malaise than one specific to individuals, even if in this case it is irresistible to say Shaun Smith really did suffer one too many head knocks. Presumably if there’s a war and she would like to go off and pretend to be a man Shaun would be happy to see her blown to bits as well.
