On Australian Greeks. One possible contributing factor to the overall shift leftwards in politics over the decades, particularly in Victoria, where most of the Greeks live and which was once a pretty staid, conservative place, is that we got a large part of the losing side in the Greek Civil War 1946-1949 – communists, and it is almost certain that no one in authority gave any thought to this at the time. The Socialist Left faction of Vic. Labor has traditionally been loaded up with them, though as time goes by this historical causation, if it does exist, no doubt weakens.
Fittingly, the Greeks’ eternal enemy, the Turk, tend to be on the Right in the ALP (the Labor Party of course being nothing but a constant affair of ethnic jostling for money/power, and old man Harry (Lee Kuan Yew) was right), and one such example is Adem Kubilay Somyurek, who we once called a “Turkroach”, and are willing to take it back maybe, if he manages to foil the Andrews’ regime’s permanent pandemic legislation, which is intended to replace the State of Emergency that cannot be extended beyond Dec. 15, and becomes a Hero of the People as the Aussie Cossack would say, as recent developments intimate may happen. Turks 1 Greeks 0 if so.
