The ABC furtively gropes and fumbles around in the dark to find some story of gay oppression, and manages to find it, in south-east Queensland, and it’s terrifying:
‘It pushes us back into the closet’: The Gold Coast doesn’t have a gay bar, link.
It is a modern city of almost 640,000 people that sells itself as a leisure capital, but for the past two years there has not been a gay bar on the Gold Coast.
For some within the local LGBTQIA+ community, there are serious concerns that the city is moving in the wrong direction.
It certainly is a serious issue, and two years is a long time, but the crack Youtube Division of the 1st ABCQueer Shock Army (Instagram) of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is textually and audio-visually all over it:
Some quotes from a person of drag (POD):
It pushes us back into the closet.
[Gold Coast is] a nightlife mecca. But is it a homophobic nightlife mecca? Absolutely.
[Gold Coast is] very masculine-driven
In Sydney no-one bats an eyelid when you’re walking hand in hand with your boyfriend down the street.
However, on the Gold Coast 30 different people look at you.
It makes a lot of other gay people unaccepting of themselves, which leads into this toxic masculinity cycle.
The people there may look at the ghey handsy holders, but they won’t go all Russian on them:
(Why isn’t the US doing something about this bigotry? Maybe they’ll get around to it soon!)
If visiting from some God forsaken place like Melbourne/Sydney the Gold Coast can almost take you back to the 1980s, if you’re that old, in that it is still Australian to a large extent, it’s full of white people and even in the supermarkets there’s a reasonable chance that the staff will be 100% white, down to the trolley collector. The trolley collector job is the most important, as it is the lowest job, and mass immigration can be seen as a form of intra-white class warfare, where the elite unconsciously seeks to humiliate, and distance themselves from, lower class whites by forcing them to work with and under people with names like Pajeet and Sandeep. In Melbourne/Sydney there are already a swathe of jobs which are considered the domain of the Pajeets and Sandeeps, and for a white person to do them is now almost shameful. But not so much on the Gold Coast, yet.
But back to the weirdos. The rest of the ABC article is just an advertisement for a drag queen show called Flamboyance, which performs at the Pink Flamingo club on the Gold Coast, but the Pink Flamingo club is not an exclusively, dedicated “gay bar”, and that’s a problem you see, whatever, and the Pink Flamingo club is you’d hope 18+, and that would at least be something, and this is about the only drag queen anyone should listen to about anything (up to a point, or points):
